Magoebaskloof Getaway – Nov 2015

As one of our first “real” fishing trips we went to Magoebaskloof Getaway in the Magoebaskloof valley. Partly because we heard the fishing was good and partly because we always wanted to see the area. It turned out to be a very good decision.

Perhaps the fishing could have been better, we only caught a few small bass in the small dam in front of our cabin. To be fair we didn’t even try the trout dam further on. We saw another guest catch a massive kurper so they are around, we just picked a bad weekend. The breathtaking surrounding scenery made up for it though.

accommodation

The log cabin was comfortable with possibly the narrowest bathroom ever but we’re not too fussy. The place was covered in little frogs during this time, and at night they were so loud we could hardly hear each other speak. Maybe we would have had more luck if we matched the hatch…

We also visited a few worthwhile places like Pot ‘n Plow for some pizza and off course we hunted down the local pub which turned out to be the Iron Crown in Haenertsburg. This quaint little town was itself well worth the visit, some nice restaurants.

Ebenezer dam was also impressive. We attempted to catch carp here without luck and we saw a lot of bass lurking but couldn’t catch any, they seemed lethargic. Still nice to have a reference, we have some amazing hidden gems in this country.

Summary

We enjoyed the fishing, accommodation was sufficient, beautiful grounds with stunning views. And besides Magoebaskloof Getaway, the area in general was amazing to visit, will be back someday…
