Just to the north of Deneysville on the Vaal River lies Barnfires. Offering a large self-catering farmhouse and a 100m private section of the river, it’s a great fishing option in the Vaal Dam area.

Yellowfish seem to be abundant here, with some rapids around the area but all the usual suspects like carp and mudfish are also caught regularly. Besides fishing, there are also quite a few other activities like horseback riding and even canoeing.

  • large furnished farmhouse which sleeps 8
  • adjacent camping area if more space is required
  • no pets allowed

  • it might be possible to catch yellowfish in the faster flowing water so bring a fly rod
  • can’t find any reports of what was used for carp but the usual flavours should work well (like pink sweets)
